General information
Aventure Tunilik Outfitters is at the heart of the Far North, where nature is at its wildest. The nearest city, Schefferville, cannot be reached by car because no road leads there. A railway built in the 50's by the local iron mining company links Schefferville to Sept-Îles, the nearest town located 506 km (315 mi) further south. That is why the best way to get to Schefferville is by plane.

The ground in Schefferville and the surrounding area is frozen all year long. This phenomenon is called "permafrost". Fishers take advantage of it and use the soil as a natural freezer during the summer, keeping their fish under moss.
Climate

Fall starts around mid-August and lasts until October. From November to May, winter covers all surrounding lands in white. Spring comes late, in June, and the warmth of "summer" is felt around mid-July, when temperatures peak at 20°C-25°C (68°F-77°F). Weather is unpredictable: blinding sun, wind, rain and snow will sometimes follow one another all in the same day. Temperatures can also be challenging and that is why you will need the appropriate clothing and equipment.

Population

Some 4500 people used to live in Schefferville until 1981, when the mine closed down. Nowadays, a thousand people live there permanently. Most of them are of native origin and belong to the Montagnais community of Matimekosh. Another native people lives about 15 km from Schefferville: the Naskapis of Kawawachikamach.

Safety and first aid
Each forest camp or lodge is equipped with a satellite telephone to keep regular contact with our office in Schefferville. Although there is no hospital in town, a doctor and nursing personnel are available at all times at the clinic. In case of an emergency, patients are sent by plane to Sept-Îles or Quebec City.
Services found in Schefferville
Before leaving for the camp, a visit at the general store and the grocery store will provide items you might have forgotten. Remember that choice is very limited. There is no bank in Schefferville, only ATMs in the convenience store and the grocery store downtown (fees of $1.50 to $2.50 per transaction will be charged to your banking account).
